This becomes especially challenging when trying to differentiate yourself from candidates who already possess relevant experience. However, there are ways to overcome this challenge and increase your chances of success.

To begin, it is important to thoroughly investigate the specifics of the role you are aiming for. This means not only understanding the role within the context of the company you are applying to but also within the broader industry.

By gaining a holistic understanding of what it takes to succeed in your desired position, you can assess your suitability and identify actionable steps to improve your chances of securing employment.

TIP: One effective method is to research and analyze job descriptions from various organizations. This will provide you with valuable insights into the expectations and qualifications sought after in your target role.

To initiate the process, begin by gathering information from multiple job listings. Open ten job descriptions that are relevant to your desired position, utilizing job boards like Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn as valuable resources.

It’s important to select roles from different companies that share similar titles and align with your preferences. Within each job description, locate the section outlining the role’s requirements.

Next, consolidate all the job requirements by creating a new Google document and copying and pasting the necessary responsibilities from all ten job descriptions into it.

Now, organize the requirements based on their frequency of appearance. Certain requirements are likely to be mentioned in multiple descriptions.

TIP: The more frequently a requirement appears, the more crucial it is for the role. Place the most commonly occurring requirements at the top of your list.

For instance, if a requirement is present in all ten descriptions, it should occupy the very top position. By following these steps, you will gain a clearer understanding of the most common and significant requirements for the role. However, you may still have some questions:

  1. Why do requirements vary across job descriptions? One common reason for this discrepancy is the use of overly general job titles or titles that fail to convey the specific scope of a particular role within a company. For example, the responsibilities of a program manager may differ between companies, with one focusing on customer management while another emphasizes project management. Similarly, a Data Analyst might primarily utilize SQL in one company but employ Python in another. Therefore, it is crucial to look beyond job titles. This is why we recommend following the process above, as it helps ensure you target the exact roles that suit you and understand the requirements for those positions.
  2. Why are some requirements higher on my list than expected, while others I anticipated barely appear? If you find yourself surprised by the results, it may be necessary to invest more time in comprehending the true nature of the role. Preconceived notions about the position might require adjustment. Additional research can be beneficial in order to accurately target the right roles during your job search.
  3. How can I determine if I am truly suited for my desired role? Experiencing self-doubt at this stage of the process is normal. Remember that transitioning to a new career means you will not have exhaustive knowledge about the role, and your existing skills and experience may not align perfectly. The more you learn about the role, the better you will understand what is required for success, allowing you to prepare yourself accordingly.

Prepare Your Professional Inventory

Temporarily set aside the master list of role requirements you created earlier. The following steps will assist you in this process:

  1. Identify your technical (hard) skills: These are specific skills related to particular tasks or situations, such as programming, technical writing, project management, and more.
  2. Recognize your non-technical (soft) skills: These skills enable you to navigate your environment, collaborate effectively with others, perform well, and achieve your goals. They encompass skills like communication, leadership, team management, and more.
  3. List your personal qualities: These are positive attributes and personality traits that showcase your character, such as honesty, a good sense of humor, and dependability. You can also include your professional interests on this list.
  4. Include your educational background: This encompasses any post-secondary education, certifications, or independent courses you have completed, whether online or offline.

TIP: Remember not to limit your professional inventory solely to skills and qualities developed through professional experience. Consider any volunteer work, extracurricular activities, or personal experiences that could help a hiring manager understand your capabilities.

Once you have compiled your inventory of skills and experiences, it’s time to align them with your requirements list.

Align Your Profile With The Job Requirements

Adapting your profile to match job requirements means understanding the company’s values, goals, and industry. Highlight how your experiences align with their needs.
